Looking Ahead: Intel Brings Powerful Connectivity to the Smart Home at Mobile World Congress

A new generation of blazing-fast, incredibly smooth connectivity is about to transform the home and allow us to enjoy new forms of rich media. At Mobile World Congress, Intel is demonstrating technologies like 5G and 802.11ax that offer fast speeds and ultralow latency. The results are more powerful broadband to the home and improved connectivity inside the home. Let’s take a closer look at how this will bring to life realistic, immersive and responsive experiences, like 360-degree video and virtual reality.

Holes-free 5G for powerful broadband

Fixed wireless access will be one of the first ways in which the industry will implement 5G. With Intel’s connected home technology, carriers can bring multigigabit 5G speeds to their subscribers with low latency and high capacity. At Mobile World Congress, our development kit for telco home gateways, in combination with the Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform, is delivering 5G to various experiences throughout the Intel booth.

One of the biggest challenges in bringing 5G to the home is transmitting millimeter wave (mmWave) signals through UV-protected windows without signal degradation. If mmWave signals can’t pass through windows, customer premises equipment (CPE) will need to be professionally installed outside the home or office, where power and Ethernet must be connected to the equipment. This adds cost to the deployment.

At our booth, we’re showing how to bring 5G into the home by passing a mmWave signal through window glass. This demonstration features a wireless remote radio head (WRRH) system that enables a 5G signal (up to 3 Gbps) to relay through the glass window. It also enables the required power to be transmitted wirelessly from the gateway inside the home to the outside unit. With this approach, operators can deliver 5G without drilling any holes into the home.

Transforming in-home connectivity

Getting fast broadband into the home is just one part of the story. Gateways play a critical role in distributing connectivity to multiple — and diverse — client devices throughout the home, serving as the hub for both existing and cutting-edge experiences in the smart home. Intel®-based home gateways deliver fast, consistent and secure connectivity. This is an essential foundation for high-quality experiences on every device. At Mobile World Congress, Intel-based home gateways are enabling the following experiences:

  • Immersive virtual reality in a dual-player scenario
  • Content streaming on multiple ultra high-definition 4K displays
  • A stadium arena experience that delivers multiple point-of-view streams

The future of Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi will be an essential radio access technology in the 5G ecosystem, helping provide the capacity and performance needed within the home to meet future traffic requirements. Soon, both home gateways and client devices will integrate the next major advancement in Wi-Fi, the upcoming IEEE 802.11ax standard. 802.11ax has the potential to dramatically boost data speeds and throughput in dense environments. At Mobile World Congress, we’re demonstrating Intel’s upcoming client and home infrastructure solutions, which are designed in accordance with the latest IEEE 802.11ax draft standard to take full advantage of 802.11ax capabilities. Intel intends to certify our solutions per the Wi-Fi Alliance ax certification once it is made available. This will ensure the Intel solutions can deliver the throughput, data rates and efficiency needed for higher-quality user experiences in densely packed environments.

The 802.11ax standard comes with a wealth of new functionalities, such as orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) in both uplink and downlink to improve spectrum efficiency, and target wake time (TWT), which can extend the battery life of connected devices. But, in order for the benefits to be fully realized, carriers and consumers alike will need to thoughtfully choose home infrastructure solutions that bring these capabilities together in an intelligent way. Intel’s upcoming solutions will take full advantage of 802.11ax functionalities for intelligent scheduling and resource allocation, network optimization and protocol awareness. Our solutions will be optimized to deliver better performance, less interference and longer battery life for the best possible user experiences.

Unleashing next-generation experiences

At Intel, our vision is to unlock the power of data for amazing smart and connected home experiences. By working closely with the industry and our partners, we’re helping operators deliver more powerful broadband to the home — via cable, DSL, fiber and, in the future, 5G — while enhancing in-home connectivity. The end results? A solid connectivity foundation to deliver breakthrough experiences in the home that excite, inspire and transform.
